A logo for day a century of service to veterans

The mission of the DAV in Connecticut is to help our fellow veterans achieve and maintain a high standard of living by providing various services to them. We have a wide variety of programs to help them. We provide claim service through our National Service Office located at the VA Medical Center in Newington. We provide transportation to veterans going to their medical appointment at the VA Medical Centers in Newington and West Haven. During the year we transport approximately 12,000 veterans and our volunteer drivers travel approximately 336,000 miles. We sponsor bingos at the Rocky Hill Veterans Home including our Christmas in February where we distribute gifts to the veterans living at the RHVH. We also provide transportation for Take a Vet fishing program. We also provide assistance to our fellow veterans in need through our Assist - A - Vet program. Once a month we go down to Bethesda Military Hospital to visit and give gifts to our country's wounded heroes through our Operation Gift Card program. We have been going to Bethesda since March 2005 and have given in excess of $2,500,000.00. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us.

Way TO GO Connecticut

The logo for way to go connecticut is blue and orange

Our goal is to help senior citizens and people with disabilities navigate transportation options by creating a point of access for all services available in the north central region of Connecticut.

Accessible transportation benefits our personal lives. Most of our daily activities take place outside our home. Because of this, transportation touches every part of our lives and without transportation there are many activities we could not take part in. Transportation also benefits others in the community like public agencies, such as human service and workforce development agencies. Transportation is what connects these agencies and the people they serve. If people can’t get to the agencies, they can’t access their services, and the agencies cannot fulfill their mission to provide life-enhancing services. Transportation impacts private businesses, educational institutions, health care services, IT IMPACTS THE COMMUNITY AT LARGE!

Cars 4 Heroes

A car is driving through a tunnel at night.

For millions of Americans, the availability of public transportation is the determining factor in their ability to access jobs and any care they require. For a lot of those people, they either live outside the range of public transit or the places they need to go to are outside of public transit zones, forcing them to miss those opportunities. Forcing them to have to walk for miles to get where they need to be. Since 1996, we have been addressing that need.

Founder Terry Franz and Mike Van Noy owned Car Biz, a used car lot in Kansas City, Missouri. That year, there had been a lot of people looking to purchase a car to only be turned down by credit companies because they were out of work due to medical emergencies, family issues or other circumstances in life. That year around Christmas time, Terry and Mike gave away 6 cars to families that in the past had been denied. A few years later, Terry got out of Car Biz and started Cars 4 Christmas full time, earning him the nickname “Car Santa.” As time would go on, he saw the need in Kansas City increasing more and more and that is where Cars 4 Heroes came from. Now, Car Santa gives away over 300 cars a year just in the Kansas City metro alone.
