War Stories Society - Veterans' Writing Workshop

The veterans’ writing workshop is a free nine-month writing workshop for serving members, veterans, and members of their families. The goal is for participants to get their stories down on paper.

Whatever level of experience you may have, your writing can be improved with a little time and effort. It is a skill that is refined with practice, just like swimming or playing the guitar. Writing your own story is a way to organize, process and find meaning in certain life events. Over time, you will hone your skills and improve.

How it works

We meet as a small group (maximum of twelve people) one evening per month from September to May (schedule varies by location). Most of the homework will be done on your own, outside of our monthly meetings. You read your assignments to the group, who will listen attentively, provide feedback, and encourage you to keep writing.

The Veterans Writing Workshop (VWW) was created as an outgrowth of a successful veterans' writing workshop hosted by Fordham-Westchester University in spring of 2010 as part of the National Endowment for the Arts' The Big Read program. Today it has grown to provide free writing workshops for veterans, active duty service members, and their families throughout the year in public settings and veterans' facilities throughout the New York Metropolitan area.

VWW has received support from the Fordham Veterans Initiative, Arts Westchester, Poets & Writers Readings/Workshops Program, the Hudson Valley Writers Center, and other funders.

The United States Veterans’ Artists Alliance (USVAA)

The United States Veterans’ Artists Alliance (USVAA) is an award-winning, multi-disciplinary non-profit arts organization, founded in 2004 by military veterans and artists. USVAA provides opportunities for veterans in the arts by highlighting the work of veterans in the arts, humanities and entertainment industry along with the contributions veterans have made to the rich cultural history of our nation since the Revolutionary War.

Additionally, USVAA networks with veterans, artists, supportive individuals and organizations within the arts and veterans’ communities to find funding and support for individual artistic projects in theater, film, television, the visual/fine arts and a wide variety of crafts.

Where possible, USVAA strives – as spokespersons in the veteran’s community and in our endeavors as artists – to address issues of concern to veterans and their families via artistic endeavors and platforms. These issues include the transition from military to civilian life, education, employment, the effects of wartime and military service injuries such as PTSD, TBI and Military Sexual Trauma (MST) and homelessness among veterans.

Edge4Vets Transition Support Workshops

A group of people are holding a fordham veterans association flag.

In the military, you learned critical strengths, including the ability to change with the circumstances, the engagement that enables you to work with others, the pro-action that helps you get things done, and the optimism that keeps you positive. And through the workshops that make up our Edge4Vets program, you'll see how to use these leadership traits to succeed in an academic environment.

With the community at Edge4Vets, you can share your personal transition story, discuss ongoing challenges, and get tips from other veterans. This one-of-a-kind program is just one of the ways Fordham helps veterans transition to academic life and achieve their goals.
