Alaska's Healing

Hearts - Alaska

Alaska's Healing Hearts is a national organization offering year-round outdoor recreational opportunities for America’s brave wounded warriors and their families. Rehabilitation activities include fishing, skiing, rodeo, The Island of Hope and Healing, and various other outdoor pursuits. We work to provide new and challenging options and experiences in an effort to contribute to the social reintegration necessary for our nation’s heroes.

We strive to reach beyond the clinical rehabilitation offered to injured military personnel and provide hope for warriors to continue to live active and productive lives.

Outward Bound for Veterans - Colorado

Outward Bound for Veterans helps returning service members and recent veterans readjust to life at home through powerful wilderness courses that draw on the healing benefit of teamwork and challenge through use of the natural world. Servicemen and veterans take part in wilderness expeditions that are physically, mentally and emotionally challenging in order to build the self-confidence, pride, trust and communication skills necessary to successfully return to their families, employers and communities following wartime service. These expeditions purposefully scaffold wartime experiences (carrying heavy packs, sore shoulders, rubbery legs, sleeping out, strange noises, sweat, dirt, frustration and anger) with authentic achievements to create positive emotional and mental outcomes.

homeward bound

adirondacks - new york

At Homeward Bound Adirondacks, we recognize the profound healing power of nature and its ability to rejuvenate both the mind and body. Our three-day weekend nature retreats are carefully curated to provide veterans with a holistic escape from the rigors and stresses of daily life.

Nestled amidst the serene backdrop of the great outdoors, these retreats offer a multisensory experience. The daily nature activities are more than just physical exercises; they are avenues for reflection, meditation, and connection. Hiking through trails allows veterans to immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of the forest, fostering a sense of oneness with the environment. Kayaking and fishing, on the other hand, bring a calming rhythm, where the gentle sway of water and the patience of awaiting a catch serve as metaphors for life’s ebb and flow. The practice of forest bathing, inspired by the Japanese tradition of ‘Shinrin-Yoku’, encourages deep immersion into the forest atmosphere, a therapeutic technique proven to reduce stress and improve feelings of well-being..
